Our Programs

The Continental Societies, Inc.® is dedicated to promoting, fostering, and advancing the welfare of children with special needs. The organization works to enhance recreational facilities, expand educational opportunities, and cultivate environments that support security, growth, and overall well-being.

In 1972, the organization launched its national initiative, Operation Awareness: H.E.E.R (Health, Education, Employment, and Recreation). This program was established to address critical areas impacting the development of young people, with a focus on strengthening programs and services for children with special needs.

Each H.E.E.R component reflects a vital dimension of youth development. Health supports overall quality of life. Education equips young people with the tools necessary to thrive in society. Employment prepares youth for the workforce and promotes economic independence. Recreation encourages balance by nurturing both mental and physical well-being.

In 1977, a fifth component, Arts and Humanities, was introduced, further enriching the program by fostering creativity, cultural awareness, and critical thinking skills essential for lifelong success.

(H)ealth

Children and youth participate in programs that promote healthy lifestyles, including lessons on balanced nutrition, asthma education, obesity prevention, and other positive wellness habits. Through our partnership with Colgate’s Bright Smiles, Bright Futures initiative, participants also receive dental screenings and oral health education from Colgate’s mobile Dental Van.

(E)ducation

The education program centers on helping students reach academic success. It offers teaching, mentoring, tutoring, and support in reading and math skills. Additional services include donations of school supplies, contributions to libraries, and literacy-based enrichment activities. Students also gain the knowledge, confidence, and attitudes needed for success in college, careers, and lifelong learning.

(E)mployment

The employment program focuses on preparing youth for future careers through exploration and planning. Participants engage in career awareness activities, job shadowing, and training designed to build independence and job readiness. The program also connects them with workforce development organizations for additional training and placement opportunities.

(R)ecreation

Recreation plays a vital role in supporting both physical and emotional well-being. Children and youth take part in fitness and leisure activities that foster healthy growth, build self-confidence, and teach positive ways to manage stress and emotions—all while encouraging active, enjoyable lifestyles.

Arts & Humanities

Young people are encouraged to explore and express their creativity through a variety of artistic and cultural experiences. Opportunities include drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, performance arts, creative writing, and other forms of visual, spoken, and written expression that showcase their individual talents and interests.
